Causes of Depression
The truth is nobody knows what causes depression. Some types of depression may run in the family, indicating a genetic component. Stressful or traumatic events may overwhelm a person's ability to cope and trigger a one-time depressive episode. Those who abuse alcohol or narcotics may actually be self-medicating to relieve depressive symptoms without knowing it.
Women may experience depression, ranging from mild to severe, after giving birth. Often called "the baby blues," postpartum depression must be taken seriously if it lasts more than a couple of days after delivery.
Major or chronic illness can also coincide with depression, with the depression often going untreated because medical professionals focus on the disease they can run tests for. But studies have shown that treating depression in conjunction with medical therapies can speed recovery and improve treatment results.
